SCB Distinguished Service Award - 2008
Dr. Anne Kapuscinski (Fisheries, Wildlife, & Conservation Biology) has been awarded a Distinguished Service Award from the Society for Conservation Biology. SCB makes 5 awards globally for contributions to the field of conservation biology. Anne is a recognized global leader in biotechnology policy, conservation of aquatic biodiversity, interdisciplinary analysis of sustainability issues, and conservation genetics of fish. Anne's impact on conservation biology extends outside the University community at the regional, national, and international level, as she has served on the Board of Trustees of the WorldFish Center of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), as a member of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and provides periodic expert testimony to the Minnesota State legislature and the United States Congress. Her accomplishments include leading the U.S. Department of Agriculture-organized working group that formulated the world's first environmental safety guidelines for genetically modified fish and shellfish, which were implemented as voluntary standards in 1996. Kapuscinski also published the first review of U.S. policies and regulations identifying important gaps in the oversight of aquatic GMOs, as well as acting as series editor of a peer-reviewed book series on methodologies for environmental risk assessment of genetically engineered organisms. Other awardees this year are Dr. Maurio Baudoin (Instituto de Ecologia, Bolivia), Dr. David Lindenmayer (Center for Resource and Environmental Studies, Canberra), Dr. Helene Marsh (James Cook University, Australia), and Dr. Jorge Soberon (Natural History Museum and Biodiversity Research Center, Kansas).
